With today’s children growing up in a world that is dominated by digital media, it’s all the more important to nurture their love of reading books. One South Shore business that has taken creative steps to encourage kids to read is Dependable Cleaners. For the past 20 years the company has run a Read to Ride program designed to incentivize reading by offering a chance at a pretty sweet reward.
The Read to Ride program gives kids ages 5 to 15 the opportunity to win a bike and other prizes just by reading books over their summer vacation. Entries can be submitted from May 14th through August 17th. A drawing will be held each Monday, from June 4th until August 20th. A total of 11 bikes will be awarded to local children. Entry forms can be picked up at any Dependable Cleaners location or downloaded from the website. Participants receive one entry form for each book they read, which means the more books your child reads, the better their chances are of winning.
Since the initiative started, Read to Ride has helped motivate local children to read over 74,000 books. In honor of the program’s 20th anniversary there will be a special kickoff party as well as a series of local children’s author events taking place. More info
