Local Brew News

Plymouth’s craft beer scene is growing with a new brewery, a second due to open this year and a new tour company offering trips to local tasting rooms.

Bay State Brew Tours

This Plymouth-based business offers escorted trips to breweries around the region. The tours offer guests a chance to travel via van to multiple craft breweries enjoying libations and a little beer education along the way. Tours are offered Friday through Sunday with options for private parties and events. There are multiple tour options to choose from. Guests can hop aboard the The South Shore Brew Tour and visit Black Hat Brew Works, Old Colony Brewing and 10th District Brewing; the South of the City Brew Tour to check out Barrelhouse Z, Castle Island Brewing and Widowmaker Brewing (opening soon); or head down to the Cape to visit Cape Cod Beer, Barnstable Brewing, Devil’s Purse Brewing and Hog Island Brewing. And don’t forget the Plymouth Area Brew Tour, with Mayflower Brewing Company, Independent Fermentations, Plymouth Beer Company and Dirty Water Distillery. All tours start at the Craft Beer Cellar on Main Street.

Plymouth Beer Company

This new brewery started up this past summer within the same building as Dirty Water Distillery on Water Street. “We’ll be focusing on old world styles of beer with a new world twist,” said Tom Frizelle, head brewer at Plymouth Beer Company, prior to opening. “We’re trying to feature local ingredients as much as possible.”

Second Wind Brewing Company

Started by three friends who began brewing together in 2013, Second Wind Brewing Company hopes to inspire beer lovers through their passion for the science and artistry of brewing. “Second Wind will offer a wide range of beer styles, from IPAs to stouts, refreshing thirst quenchers for the beach and boat, plus specialty beers that showcase different techniques and flavors,” says co-founder Kenny Semcken. Both the brewery and taproom will be located on Howland Street and are expected to open this year.
