Firepit_7383BEST SECRET RESTAURANT PATIO

Novara

Sunshine pours into a pristine brick courtyard located in the alley beside Milton’s newest dining hotspot, Novara. Connected to the main restaurant by a wall of folding glass doors, but hidden from the street, the patio is an urban oasis outfitted with small trees, potted flowers and a glowing fire pit. On warm summer days, guests can dine alfresco and choose from an array of creative Italian specialties prepared by chef Tony DeRienzo. The menu includes flavorful items like pizza topped with squash blossoms and a shaved Brussels sprout salad. Creative cocktails and an extensive wine list provide plenty of pairing options. Inside the restaurant, the atmosphere blends rustic charm with a stylish, city vibe. Guests gather around an enormous bar and watch chefs at work in the open “show” kitchen. Vintage film clips are shown on a large wall-mounted movie screen—paying homage to the building’s previous life as the Milton Cinema—and, if you’re lucky, you might even bump into celebrity investor Jordan Knight of New Kids on the Block fame.

BEST PLACE TO DINE
WITH A CITY VIEWRooftopDining_8139

The Tavern at Quarry Hills

Pairing fantastic food and drink with breathtaking panoramic views of the Boston skyline, there’s nothing quite like dining at The Tavern at Quarry Hills in Quincy. The casually elegant establishment serves up creative takes on comfort food to golfers who have finished a day on the course as well as many South Shore couples and young professionals seeking a unique dining experience. Lunch and dinner are served year-round in The Tavern’s spacious dining room and seasonally on the restaurant’s wrap-around deck and at the newly opened Crossing Nines Patio & Bar. Chef David Todisco changes the menu seasonally to highlight the freshest ingredients. Popular summer choices include items like sesame chicken lettuce wraps, fish tacos and fresh burratta ravioli. Guests drink up the stellar sunsets and goblets of sweet sangria and watch a sparkling city light show once darkness falls.

BEST BARISTA CLASSES

Speedwell Coffee

If you’ve ever been curious about the mechanics of an espresso machine or marveled at the way seasoned coffee shop baristas artfully craft cappuccinos, you’re in luck. Speedwell Coffee,
a small-batch wholesale coffee roaster based in Plymouth, offers a comprehensive and
buzz-worthy barista training program. The classes are held once a month in the company’s newly constructed tasting lab and are designed to educate folks who are just getting into the coffee biz or for anyone who owns an espresso machine and wants to master the tricks of brewing a better cup of coffee. Participants learn about grinder adjustments, proper espresso extraction and the fundamentals of milk steaming. Specializing in roasting a range of single-origin and proprietary blended coffees, the company also offers its wholesale customers a complimentary coffee 101 class. Participants are enchanted by the intoxicating aroma of roasting coffee beans and energizing sips of the local brew.

BEST UPSCALE FARM-TO-TABLE PRESENTATION

Just Right Farm

The carrots and beets come straight out of the earth, but the farm-to-table dinners hosted at Just Right Farm in Plympton are far from casual. Vases of fresh flowers and flutes of Champagne welcome guests as they arrive at the rural, 300-year-old farmstead that hosts sumptuous meals inside an elegantly appointed screen house. A trio of talented chefs, Just Right Farm owner Kimberly Russo, Elaine Murphy and Marilyn Browne, has a hand in everything from the planting of the seeds to harvesting the crops and meticulously preparing each decadent dish. This summer, the farm has plans to team up with chef Marc Ehrler, executive chef of Hilton Worldwide, to host two exclusive Friends of James Beard Foundation dinners to raise money for local culinary students. The meals began with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails crafted with house-made shubs and bitters and spirits provided by local distilleries, and were followed by a nine-course dinner and wine pairings from New England vineyards. Lit by antique oil lamps and the twinkle of fireflies in the distance, it’s a beautiful setting for a delicious summer meal to remember. Reservations are required.

BEST ADVENTURE SKILLS CAMP

The Archery Center

If your thirst for adventure is stoked by watching action flicks like “The Hunger Games,” it might be time to take matters into your own hands. Children and adults can practice exciting and challenging skills like archery, geocaching, rock climbing and more through programs offered at The Archery Center in Hingham. A full-day summer camp engages school-age participants in activities that demand physical skill and focus, and offers the thrill of competition in an environment that promotes team building. Adult workshops provide an alternative to typical corporate retreats and are designed to increase productivity and morale in the workplace while challenging people to flex muscles they didn’t know they had.

BEST ECOLOGY EXPEDTIONS FOR FAMILIES

Duxbury Bay Maritime School

Duxbury Bay Maritime School is best known for its vibrant kayaking, sailing and rowing programs but it also offers a great ecology program designed to entertain and educate kids about the South Shore’s coastal environment. There are programs for all ages, but one of the most unique offerings is The Big Fish Little Fish program, which is open to children as young as 3-5 years old who are accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Small groups are escorted on short trips out to Duxbury Beach and local salt marshes to learn about fish, oysters, sandpipers and other coastal creatures that are native to the region. Students can also get up close and personal with marine life using touch tanks at the Duxbury headquarters. These organized outings are fun, educational experiences the whole family can enjoy.

Nora ValdeINSIDE HOMEBEST OUTDOOR SCULPTURES

The Art Complex Museum

Not all visitors to The Art Complex Museum in Duxbury go through the front door. That’s because the museum, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, is home to a unique collection of over a dozen permanent and temporary outdoor sculptures. The outdoor installations are appreciated by art lovers of all ages but are especially popular with parents of young children who enjoy the freedom of exploring the 13-acre property at their own pace. The museum has even developed a new outdoor sculpture quest with these families in mind, supplying kids with “I Spy” treasure hunt maps. Notable sculptures on the property include a series of large concrete spheres by artist Rick Brown called “Butterfly Effect,” a limestone pillar carved with figures by Argentinian artist Nora Valdez as well as works by local artists like Marshfield’s George Greenamyer, creator of an industrial metal piece called “Five Shaker Houses” and a large stone bench by Duxbury stone carver Kristine Brennan.

BEST BOUTIQUE
FOR LUXURY GOODSLeatherGoods_7951

Louie at LaRossa Shoe

Exclusive Globe-Trotter luggage, Dubarry boots (made famous by fashionable celebrities like Britain’s Kate Middleton) and finely crafted Alden shoes are just a few examples of the types of products shoppers find at Louie, a new boutique offshoot of LaRossa Shoe in South Weymouth. Established in 1923 by Louis LaRossa, a master shoe cobbler, LaRossa Shoe built its reputation around a dedication to high-quality leather shoe restoration work and exceptional customer service. The new shop continues the family legacy through the sale of designer clothing, accessories and footwear for men and women. Visitors discover an eclectic array of distinctive products, from crocodile wallets and Swiss watches to Barbour scarves, handcrafted Brackish feather bow ties and locally crafted Randolph Engineering eyewear. And while the well-heeled clientele seek out hard-to-find brands, the timeless art of shoe repair lives on, just steps away.
