Behind the Lens

Great photographs don’t happen by accident. The talented and intrepid photography instructors at BlueHour Photo Ventures know this well. They have made it their mission to teach aspiring photographers the tricks to capturing images of incredible moments and places.

Founder and professional photographer Paul Nguyen of Hanson, along with photographers Lauren Chagaris and Allie Richards, organize group workshops in the field throughout the year. They escort students young and old to unforgettable destinations around New England and abroad to hone their newfound skills.

The first of many photography workshops in 2017, a Beginner’s Bootcamp at Scituate Light, will take place March 25.

“This workshop is for anyone who might like to experiment with their camera and learn how to get out of auto mode,” says Richards. Students will learn about the exposure triangle, composition techniques, camera settings and modes, as well as how to take care of equipment. Workshops fill up fast, so booking ahead is advised.

For people who’ve already mastered the basics, BlueHour Photo Ventures also offers specialty workshops that target specific skills, like how to shoot lowlight long exposures and night photography (July 1), and how to capture “wispy” shots of waterfalls (July 16). The company also organizes extended workshops and tours to locations outside of New England, such as the Canadian Rockies and Iceland. “We make sure to take care of all accommodation, transportation and most meals,” explains Richards, “and we take you to the best locations at the best times of day to create works of art.”
