When the bittersweet word got out that Vin & Eddie’s was closing after nearly six decades, local diners were hopeful the new restaurant would fill the very big shoes of its predecessor. Sorelle Bar & Grille has done just that, and then some. Chef/owner Andrea Schnell and her wife, Kirsten, purchased the property along Route 18 in Abington last fall, partnering with restaurateur Jon D’Allessandro of Eat Drink Mingle Group, a partner in Marina Bay’s Siros, Port 305 and Blue. The trio brought on general manager Mark Doherty and together opened the 150-seat eatery. (If Schnell and Doherty look familiar, you probably recognize them from Square Café in Hingham, where they worked together for more than 15 years).
A sparkling new bar, high ceilings, a spacious outdoor patio and bright, modern decor define the renovated restaurant, which opened in April. With its Italian-centric menu, Sorelle pays tribute to its predecessor by featuring classic dishes like clams casino, chicken saltimbocca and chicken parmesan, presented with Schnell’s creative flair. Notable dishes include Sicilian style baked cod topped with basil crumbs and served atop crispy fried polenta and Maine mussels served in a creamy lobster broth with chili flakes and topped with fresh lemon and basil. Another standout is the grilled octopus, which comes served over stewed Borlotti beans, arugula, limoncello vinaigrette, smoked pepper and almond emulsion. The dining experience comes full circle with the restaurant’s impressive bar menu and wine program, which also has an Italian bent. Be sure to save room for the creamy tiramisu, which is worth every indulgent calorie.— Kellie Speed
