Stepping Stones for Stella is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to make it easier for children with physical disabilities to experience the joy of a day at the beach. The organization builds and donates beach buggies suitable for children ages 2 – 10 years old (weighing up to 60 pounds). The special buggies were the brainchild of Nicole Puzzo, whose daughter Stella has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair.
“There was no other pediatric beach chair like it available,” says Puzzo, whose father (Jack Banda of Hingham) came up with the beach buggy design. The lightweight, all-terrain chairs are constructed out of high-grade PVC pipe with comfortable mesh seats and large WheelEEZ® Balloon Wheels that make it possible for the buggies to travel over sand, gravel, dirt, grass and even snow. Each beach buggy weighs about 20 pounds and the tires can come off so the chairs can fit in a standard SUV. So far, Stepping Stones for Stella has produced 200 beach buggies and there are 30 kids currently on a waiting list.
